Thomas is Back On the Board for 2012

Just three hours north of the WindsorONE mill in Surry Virginia, you will find some of the finest finish carpentry in Loudoun County by Jon Canigiani. Jon’s antique finish built-in bench is the highlight of this post

Jon took the next step in his design by combining Bead Board backing, Stain Grade seat and woven wire for the cabinet doors. But that wasn’t the end, his design also incorporated an antique finish.

So how did Jon get from a primed trim and bead board to this great built in? Jon’s design was conceptualized by a freehand drawing. The joints and general construction of this built- in were done with a combination of the Kreg Jig and the Festool  Domino.

The finish coat on this built-in ties all the design together. Jon used a coating system that he describes as two base coats of  Latex Paint – Poly Coat  – Alkyd Benjamin Moore glaze.

Q & A with Mor-Son Clifton Boyz Construction Part 2

When builders focus on the relationships made with their clients, they often grow the scope of the project and are given a better opportunity to make design decisions. As you will see, this San Clemente house was turned into a home:

Q & A with Mor-Son Clifton Boyz Construction

Question: What do you get when you combine Southern California Natives with a passion for adding craftsmanship to the  neighborhoods that  they have been devoted to?

Answer: Mor-Son Clifton Boyz Construction.

These pictures are a small part of the  immense partnership between Mor-Son and Clifton Boyz .

The pride of this partnership extends beyond their clients projects. Mor-Son Clifton Boyz take the belt on approach, leaving nothing to jeopardize when it comes to building and remodeling homes. Not only do they take the belt on approach, they also reach out to their clients neighbors securing a foundation of relationships that their clients have built. These foundations are so curtail in maintaining a bond that can often get lost during building projects.

This work is for the dogs

If you heard that a Builder or Architect provided detail and craftsmanship for the dogs, you probably wouldn’t  let them design or build your home. That’s not the case with this dog project, or should I say Dog House Project. The Laguna Beach Animal Shelter is holding their first annual project pet house auction.

Local Builders and Architects have grouped together to help support the Laguna Animal Shelter by donating their unique designs and craftsmanship. Pictured in this post is The Rascal House that was designed by Daniel Martinez Architect & built by Robert Thomas Carey. Master Builder CA Lic#396167.

This design along with seven other dog houses can be viewed at Tivoli Too in Laguna Beach, California through September 9th . The live auction for the houses will be at the 15th Annual Laguna Beach Pet Parade & Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, September 11, 2011. You can also view these  homes online at the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter first annual project pet house auction website: Laguna Beach Animal Shelter

The Eisenhower House – KMC

The Eisenhower House is a cottage that sits on top of the Big Island of Hawaii in the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) and housed General Dwight Eisenhower and family for a vacation after World War II. During my trip to the Big Island in January, I had the opportunity to meet with the Architectural Historian from the United States Army and tour this beautiful cottage.

From the flooring to the straps on the ceiling, this cottage was recently restored back to its original 1934 craftsman detail. A Preservation Honor Awards from Historic Hawaii Foundation was presented to U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii, Architectural historian Kenneth Hays, The Administrators & Staff of the Kīlauea Military Camp.

Where Have I Been ???

It’s been over two months since the last  post of Thomas On The Board and you might be thinking what happened ????

Well I’m glad to tell you that there is no lack of projects to post. I recently had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and visit a few custom home projects that have views that will make your jaw drop. But Thomas on the Board is not about views, it’s about builders that are passionate about Craftsmanship, Quality & Design.

Here are some the sites that I got to visit  :

This project is by Pitzer Built in Napili – Maui. The project is still in construction, but you can get a good view right now of the exterior detail that has been added to this beautiful home. To see some amazing homes that were built by Pitzer Built, visit their website: http://pitzerbuilt.com

Stay tuned for some more photo’s of this home I will be posting in May

COULTER CONSTRUCTION, INC.

Coulter Construction specializes in making homes that are bullet proof to the exterior elements of Hawaii. Bullet proof may sound like it lacks in detail & character, but that’s not the case with Coulter Construction homes. These homes have every detail that you would find in a wood framed home in addition to some details that will have you scratching your head on how it’s structurally supported.
